General Mohammed al-Haddad
General Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad - GNU Army Chief of Staff, was killed in an airplane crash in Turkey on December 23, 2025. He served as the head of the armed forces of the Government of National Unity (GNU) based in western Libya.
Mahmoud al-Gedewi, the head of military manufacturing, General Fetouri Ghrebil, the commander of Army Land Forces, also died. An interpreter and photographer also were killed. The five were returning from Ankara after meetings with Turkish defense officials.
General Salah al Namroush has been appointed by the Presidential Council on a temporary basis. A permanent replacement will be a political decision with a number of influential stakeholders and militia leaders weighing in on the process.
