Zawiya

Located on the coast road west of Tripoli about 45 kilometers away, Zawiya is one of Libya's largest cities with a population of around 200,000 to 250,000. It houses one of western Libya's most important oil facilities, the Zawiya Oil Refinery Company. A large oil terminal in Zawiya provides transport of oil to overseas markets. Zawiya is controlled by several different competing militias.
One of the militia units located in Zawiya is the Petroleum Facilities Guard (PFG). There are several other militias under nominal MoI or MoD control in the Zawiya area - all of them competing for influence, a share of illicit activities, and territorial control. The militias are organized substantially around neighborhoods, families, and local alliances. There are two historically important rival power centers in the Zawiya region.
Zawiya is a center for the lucrative smuggling networks that bring in drugs and alcohol and export gasoline and other goods to Tunisia to the west and south into the Sahara countries. Zawiya is also a center for human smuggling, sending people of other nations in boats into the Mediterranean to be picked up by vessels manned by human rights NGOs who bring them to European shores for asylum.
The Zawiya refinery is Libya's largest operational refinery, with the capacity to refine 120 barrels per day of crude oil. It is connected to the Sharara oilfield in southwest Libya which has the capacity of approximately 300,000 bpd. Fuel is refined here to supply the domestic market, although much of it is smuggled out of the country. Control over the refinery in Zawiya provides significant economic and political leverage
Zawiya sits astride the principal coastal route connecting Tripoli with Tunisia, making it important to commerce, military movement, and access to the capital.
The city was an important center of resistance against Muammar Gaddafi during the 2011 uprising and experienced heavy fighting before opposition forces captured it during the advance on Tripoli.
Education: The city is home to the University of Zawiya.
Administrative status: Zawiya is the principal city of Zawiya District in the historic region of Tripolitania.
Energy infrastructure: Besides the refinery and oil terminal, the area contains a major power station and other nationally important energy facilities.
