111th Border Security BrigadeHome > Security > Western Militias > 111th Brigade The 111th Military Brigade was formerly known as the 301 Battalion. The commander of the brigade, as of late 2024, was Abdul Salam Zubi. The forces of the 111th Brigade are based in the southwest area of Tripoli; although some are based in the Misrata region. Many of the men serving in the brigade are recruited from the Misrata region. The brigade has several T-72 tanks based in Tripoli and Misrata and is sometimes referred to as the 111 Armored Brigade. Recently the brigade went through a reorganization, it is now named the 111th Border Security Brigade falling under the command of the Border Security Agency. The 111th Brigade, commanded by Abdul Salam al-Zoubi, is a prominent military faction based in Tripoli, Libya. Formerly known as the 301st Brigade, it primarily comprises members from Misrata and operates under the auspices of the Government of National Unity (GNU). The brigade has been instrumental in the complex and often volatile security landscape of Tripoli and its surrounding regions. Formation and Evolution Initially established as the 301st Infantry Battalion, the unit underwent restructuring and rebranding to become the 111th Armoured Brigade. This transformation was part of a broader strategy by the GNU's Ministry of Defense to consolidate military forces and enhance operational effectiveness. In 2022, under the directive of Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, the brigade was officially integrated into the General Staff, reflecting its growing significance within Libya's military framework. Leadership of Abdul Salam al-Zoubi Abdul Salam al-Zoubi has been at the helm of the 111th Brigade, steering its operations and strategic direction. His leadership was further recognized in July 2024 when Prime Minister Dbeibah appointed him as the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defense. This appointment underscores al-Zoubi's influence and the trust placed in him to oversee critical defense matters in Libya. Al Zoubi, since becoming the defacto Minister of Defense, has visited several European, African, and Middle East countries. In May 2025 he visited Tampa, Florida attending the USSOCOM sponsored SOF Week and meeting with high-level U.S. defense and state officials. 1. Operational Engagements and Clashes The 111th Brigade has been actively involved in various military engagements, particularly in and around Tripoli. In January 2023, clashes erupted between the 111th Brigade and the Special Deterrence Force (Rada) near Tripoli International Airport. These confrontations, involving medium and heavy weaponry, resulted in casualties and highlighted the ongoing power struggles among Tripoli's militias. Further incidents in August 2024 saw the brigade deployed in Tajoura to mediate conflicts and restore order. Their presence was pivotal in reopening the coastal road and removing barriers, facilitating the return of stability to the area. Role in Political and Military Unification Efforts The 111th Brigade has also played a role in Libya's broader political and military unification efforts. In June 2023, Abdul Salam al-Zoubi participated in discussions with other military leaders and the head of the High Council of State, Khalid al-Mishri, to deliberate on electoral laws and the nation's future direction. Such engagements underscore the brigade's involvement beyond mere military operations, contributing to shaping Libya's political landscape. Challenges and Controversies Despite its official status, the 111th Brigade has faced challenges typical of Libya's fragmented military environment. The January 2023 clashes with the Rada Force near Tripoli International Airport exemplify the territorial disputes and competition for influence among militias. These incidents have raised concerns about the stability of ceasefire agreements and the effectiveness of unified command structures. Conclusion The 111th Brigade, under the command of Abdul Salam al-Zoubi, remains a significant entity in Libya's military and political spheres. Its evolution from the 301st Battalion to its current status reflects broader efforts to unify and strengthen Libya's defense institutions. However, the brigade's involvement in various clashes indicates the persistent challenges in achieving lasting stability in the region. As Libya continues its journey toward unification and peace, the role of the 111th Brigade and its leadership will undoubtedly be pivotal in shaping the nation's future.
